Donald Trump

The billionaire  told Mathews that some people in his party are conservative, and they believed that abortion should be outlawed. Trump also stated that he is pro-life, abortion is a “very serious problem,” and he is in favor of banning the practice.

Trump said, “There has to be some sort of punishment.” Mathews asked, “For the woman?  He said “Yeah” while nodding.

When asked what kind of punishment he would advocate, Trump said, “I don’t know.”  On the question, if the man should be held responsible, he replied, “Different feelings, different people, I would say no.”

Trump received criticisms

After MSNBC had released a clip of the interview,Trump received a deluge of criticisms. The media outlet will release the full interview on Wednesday night.

Carol Tobias, the president of National Right to Life tweeted, “The inept thing Donald Trump said about women who have abortions is making pro-lifers cringe.”

“Women’s lives are not disposable. There’s nothing else to say, as Donald Trump’s remarks today have said it all,” said Dawn Laquens, executive vice president and chief experience officer of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).

Governor John Kasich said, “Of course women shouldn’t be punished. I don’t think that’s an appropriate response.” He added that Trump “will figure out a way to say that he didn’t say it or he was misquoted.”

Senator Ted Cruz said, “Once again Donald Trump has demonstrated that he hasn’t seriously thought through the issues, and he’ll say anything just to get attention. On the important issue of the sanctity of life, what’s far too often neglected is that being pro-life is not simply about the unborn child; it’s also about the mother—and creating a culture that respects her and embraces life.”

“Of course, we shouldn’t be talking about punishing women; we should affirm their dignity and the incredible gift they have to bring life into the world,” added Cruz.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton criticized Trump as “horrific and telling” Senator Bernie Sander called him “shameful.”

Trump reverses position

In a statement, Trump clarified, “If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal, and the federal courts upheld this legislation or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state, and federal law; the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman. The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed — like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”
