Samsung Unveils Galaxy Note 7 with Iris-Scanning Technology

Samsung Electronics (KRX: 005930) unveiled the Galaxy Note 7 with innovative features such as the iris-scanning camera. With its new large-screen smartphone, the South Korean electronics giant showed it is working hard to maintain its dominance in the global smartphone market.

During the first quarter of 2016, Samsung extended its lead over Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) with 23.2% market share in the global smartphone market. The iPhone maker’s market share was 14.8%, according to data from Gartner.

In a statement, DJ Koh, president of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung, said, “The Galaxy Note7 combines productivity and entertainment, and strong security features. Powering a robust ecosystem, it is the ideal device for those who want to achieve more in life.”

Galaxy Note 7 has strong security features

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Note 7 set a new standard for large-screen devices because of its innovative features, refined craftsmanship, premium materials, unique symmetrical edge design, and strong security features.

The Galaxy Note 7 sports a water resistant body and S Pen that allows users to bring their ideas to life with easily, quickly, and precisely.

The smartphone is equipped with a curved 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED screen and ready to stream HDR video and give users a cinema-like experience. It also offers a Game Pack that is available through Google Play.

The smartphone is integrated with advanced security that combines Samsung Knox with biometric authentication including a fingerprint scanner and an iris scanner.

The South Korean electronics giant said the Galaxy Note 7 users have the option to use their biometric authentications interchangeably depending on how they use their smartphone, their location, and tasks.  According to the company, the Secure Folder feature provides users an extra level of security to keep their private and personal information safe.

Users can use the company’s iris scanning technology to make sure that their purchases through Samsung Pay are secure.

The Galaxy Note 7 also supports Samsung Pass, which brings the fingerprint and iris scanning technology to more apps and services.

The smartphone has an advanced camera with dual-pixel sensor technology, wide aperture and fast auto focus. It has 64GB internal memory, expandable storage and MicroSD support for up to 256GB.

Fastest growing segment in Europe

Samsung’s chief marketing officer in Europe told Blomberg in an interview that some people in the industry were skeptical of the company’s strategy when it introduced its first large-screen Galaxy Note in 2011.

According to him, “Actually the industry ridiculed us to some degree, but the way it’s evolved is really interesting, because the large-screen segment is the fastest growing segment now in Europe. It accounts for approaching something like 20 percent of the market. So this is not a niche proposition anymore.”

Galaxy Note 7 availability

The Galaxy Note 7 will be available in the United States on August 19. The company will start accepting preorders on August 3 with exclusive offer for a free Gear Fit2 or 256GB MicroSD.

AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless will carry the Galaxy Note 7 and it will be available in blue coral, silver titanium and black onyx colors.
